What Is an IP Address? A Beginner's Guide (2026)
Every device on the internet has one — but what does an IP address actually do, and what can someone learn from it?
An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique numerical label assigned to every device that connects to the internet. It works like a postal address: when you request a website, that site needs to know where to send the data back.
Public vs Private IP
Your router has one public IP shared by every device in your home. Inside your network, each device (laptop, phone, smart TV) has a private IP that only your router sees. Websites only ever see your public IP.
What does your IP reveal?
- Your approximate city and country (via geolocation databases)
- Your internet service provider (ISP)
- Your timezone
- Whether you're using a VPN or proxy
